How to Commission a Painting

Creating a bespoke artwork for clients is one of my favourite things to do as a professional artist.

It’s such a privilege to be trusted to make a painting for someone’s home, a treasured piece of artwork that they can enjoy for years to come.

I’ve met a lot of people who aren’t sure where to begin when it comes to how to go about commissioning something. It’s not as scary, complicated or expensive as you might think!

The first piece of advice I’d give anyone looking to commission a painting is to make sure you really like the style and subject matter of the artist. Have a good look at their website, instagram or portfolio to make sure you’re both going to be in alignment.

For me, as a landscape artist, commissioned paintings I’ve done in the past have often been of people’s favourite views: snowy mountains, cityscapes, remote Scottish valleys, lochs and beaches.

As well as deciding on the composition of the painting you want, it’s useful to have a think about roughly what size you’d like it to be.

Once we've established what you'd like, I will share some images of preliminary rough sketches and give you a quote (which includes framing and courier costs) and ask for a 50% deposit. The remainder is due after you've received your painting and are happy with it.

I have a waiting list for commissions, so please allow plenty of time, especially if it is for a gift!

Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or want to book an appointment to talk about a commission you have in mind:
