I think for every artist it takes years for their style to materialise.
My art tutor at Leith School of Art was endlessly patient with me as I careered between abstractionism, florals and (I’m not even joking) a thankfully brief phase of collaged high heeled shoes.
It’s a necessary (if mortifying!) step to figuring out what type of artist you’re going to be. And there’s no hurrying or manipulating the process.
I had made my mind up at one point to be an abstract artist, but jagged mountainous hillsides kept appearing in my paintings: I like to think it was my authentic creativity trying to break through.
And boy, did it break through! It was like the floodgates had opened, and my obsession about landscape began. Now I can’t imagine painting anything else.
