How to Start an Art Collection Without Feeling Overwhelmed

People often assume you need deep knowledge (or a big wallet) to start an art collection. But the truth is much simpler and much more joyful: your art collection begins the moment you choose one piece you genuinely love.
How to Start Your Own Collection with Confidence and Joy
Whether you’re decorating your home, looking for something meaningful to mark a milestone, or simply wanting to support artists you admire, collecting art can be an enriching and emotional experience. This guide is designed to help you begin that journey with ease, confidence and excitement.
1. Why Collect Art?
Original artwork has the power to transform a space. It changes how a room feels, how you feel in it, and how you connect to home. But beyond aesthetics, art captures memory, identity, story and mood: especially landscape art, where colour and atmosphere can have a deeply emotional effect.
Many of my collectors say they choose a painting because it “feels like taking a breath,” or “it makes them smile”, or because it reminds them of a meaningful moment: a holiday, a hillwalk, a favourite view, a chapter of life they want to hold onto.
Collecting art, at its heart, is collecting experiences.
2. You Don’t Need to Be an Expert
Let me give you permission: you don’t need to know anything about art to choose the right piece.
You don’t need to understand mark-making, art history, composition, or technique. You don’t need to follow trends or impress anyone. Your taste is valid, even if you can’t explain it yet.
If you feel drawn to a piece and can imagine feeling happy when you see it every day, that’s enough.
What you think about a painting is much more important than a price tag or an instagram following. The idea of “getting it wrong” holds people back from beginning an art collection, or even entering an art gallery. Meaningful collections grow slowly and intentionally and I’d love to share some tips with you about how to begin, or grow, yours.
3. Start With What You Love
Spend time looking at a painting: think about the colours and mood. What does it make you feel?
For many people, it starts with landscape paintings: views that lift the heart or calm the mind.
Ask yourself:
What places feel meaningful to me?
What colours feel like “home”?
What mood do I want to bring into a room?
Do I want something energising, soothing, nostalgic, bright or atmospheric?
Your collection will grow naturally from pieces that speak to you.
Your taste is valid, even if you can’t explain it yet.
4. How to Look at Art (In a Relaxed Way)
There’s no pressure. But here are gentle questions that can help:
What’s the first emotion this painting gives me?
Can I imagine it in my home?
Does it remind me of a memory or place?
Could I happily look at this every day?
If you don’t know why you like something, that’s fine. Loving it is enough.
Social media interior makeovers suggest that it’s possible to create stylish homes with the snap of a finger, but the truth is that when it comes to building your own art collection, it takes time.
Your confidence about knowing what works for you needs time to grow.
5. Setting a Budget Without Limiting Yourself
Original artwork that speaks to you doesn’t have to be expensive at all and it shouldn’t have to require a large investment. Look out for:
Artists’ studio sales.
Local art fairs.
Racks of original unframed artwork in galleries.
Smaller paintings (off the wall or painted by commission) as they are always cheaper than bigger ones.
“Own Art” stickers in galleries and larger art fairs means interest-free art loans and payment plans are available.
If you’re not sure if a painting will fit in a particular space, or of the light in a room, ask for a digital mockup.
The intrinsic value of any painting is about its connection with you, not its cost.
6. Framing: Simple, Natural, Timeless
A good frame finishes a piece like a gorgeous handbag completes an outfit. My paintings are usually framed in simple, handcrafted wooden box frames that let the artwork breathe without overwhelming it.
If you prefer a different frame style to match your home, I can guide you.
7. Why Scottish Landscape Art Is an Ideal First Purchase
Scottish landscape art is a wonderful place to begin an art collection because it offers both emotional connection and enduring value. Our mountains, lochs, islands and ever-changing skies have a way of speaking to people instantly, even if they’ve only visited Scotland once (or dream of coming one day).
The work is recognisably “of a place” and yet varied enough in mood, colour and style that first-time buyers can easily find something that resonates.
It also feels meaningful: you’re not just buying a painting, but a piece of landscape, memory and atmosphere that you can live with every day. And because Scottish artists are widely collected at home and abroad, a first purchase can become the start of a thoughtful, personal collection with room to grow.
8. The Value of Buying From a Living Artist
Art can be more than just decoration, it’s an asset. Whether you’re an art collector looking to begin your portfolio or a business aiming to enhance your space while making a smart investment, owning original artwork can offer long-term financial benefits.
Unlike the stock exchange in recent years, the art market has risen significantly. There’s also the opportunity to invest in something that reflects your own individuality and values, alongside the perk of enjoying seeing it on your walls every day.
The best potential for return lies in buying paintings from emerging artists. Art increases in value as the artist gains recognition.
9. Commissions made just for you
If you have a particular place you love - a coastline, mountain, glen or island - a commission can be a deeply personal way to begin your collection.
I work with clients to choose colours, moods, sizes and a composition that suits them and their home. It’s a collaborative process, and one of my favourite parts of being an artist.
You’ll be part of every stage, from reference images to final framing.
10. Buying Art While Travelling
Many of my collectors fall in love with Scotland’s landscapes while visiting, and taking a painting home becomes a way of keeping that experience alive.
Buying original Scottish art while travelling:
supports local artists
creates a meaningful and bespoke souvenir
carries the mood and magic of Scotland back home
I ship internationally, and can pack pieces safely for travel if you’d prefer to take them with you.
11. Real Stories From First-Time Collectors
Every collector’s story is different. Here are a few of my favourites:
A 50th Birthday Gift: Loch Tay
A client recently commissioned a sweeping view over Loch Tay towards Ben Lawers in soft autumn colours. It will be the centrepiece of their home and a cherished birthday gift woven with memory and place.
An American Tourist: “I want to take that feeling home”
At the Dundas Street Gallery in Edinburgh, a visitor from the US chose a Highland landscape because it reminded her of the moment she first saw the mountains appear through cloud. She told me, “I want to take that feeling home.” That’s what art does, it lets you take a moment with you.
A First Purchase: A Sunset Over Barra
At the Edinburgh Art Fair, a young collector circled the room three times, returning again and again to a small watercolour of a Barra sunset. Eventually he pointed and said, “I think I’m in love with it.” And that was that, his first ever artwork.
Other collectors have chosen pieces to celebrate engagements, anniversaries, new homes and retirements. Some simply want a daily reminder of a place where they feel most themselves.
Art becomes part of your life and your story.

13. Closing Reflection
Your Art Collection Begins with One Piece You Truly Love
A meaningful art collection doesn’t need to be perfect, impressive or carefully strategised. It certainly doesn’t need to follow trends or please anyone else. It simply needs to reflect who you are: your memories, your tastes, the moments and landscapes that move you.
Whether it’s a small painting that brings joy to a quiet corner of your home, or a sweeping Scottish landscape that transforms a room, begin with the piece that makes your heart lift.
Everything grows naturally from there.
